Her prince charming, one month from the set wedding date ask to see her finances, once he learned of her bad, bad credit said…your credit is so bad…”I cant afford to marry you! And the wedding is off! Can you image your true love saying something like that to you?
Many of us can relate to this story, we might not want to but we really deep down inside can. Like Marilyn, many of us were raised wanting more for ourselves. Through hard work, and more than a few mistakes; we were able to finally define our own future. “Things My Father Used To Say”
Author - Bishop Charles H. Ellis III; Review by: Monroe Taylor
In honor of Father’s Day, I thought this would be the perfect book. The book titled “Things My Father Used To Say” by Bishop Charles H. Ellis III. First let me say many preachers will enjoy this book without a doubt. Its three generations of preachers in this family. And Bishop Ellis III is reminded about the things and situations his father told him about.
If you love wisdom, you’ll love this book. Bishop Charles H. Ellis, III calls to mind the phenomenal wisdom of his father, the beloved Bishop David Lee Ellis, Sr. this writing is powerful, practical, everyday instruction is godly living built upon his father’s life experiences. He shares some of the “Proverbs-style” golden nuggets that not only shaped his life, but they could truly change yours as well.
Bishop David Ellis was a very special man; a busy pastor; a beloved community leader; and most of all he was a loving family man who took time to position his children for good success and their God-ordained destiny. Bishop Charles Ellis is now the Assistant Presiding Prelate of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World, Inc. following in his father’s footsteps in many ways and also in various arenas. For those that didn’t know his Father this book enables them to catch a glimpse of this wise and practical “sage.”
Bishop Noel Jones, Pastor of City of Refuge in Los Angeles had this to say about the book: “Bishop David L. Ellis was most prolific in applying practical and common sense to everyday situations. When he would share his thoughts, they were simple yet revelatory in meaning, value and theory.”

“Treasures in Darkness”
Author - Taffy A. Anderson M.D.; Review by: Monroe Taylor
Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths in women. The chance of a woman developing breast cancer in her lifetime is one out of eight according to the latest statistics from the American Cancer Society. It was also estimated that in the year 2006, 212,920 women would develop invasive breast cancer, and 40,970 would ultimately die from the disease. Several prominent people with whom you are familiar have developed breast cancer in their lives, including the former first ladies Betty Ford and Nancy Reagan, as well as celebrities Diahann Carroll and Sheryl Crow. There are numerous others who are not willing to openly disclose the details of the emotional journey they undertook. But they too are important and cannot be forgotten.
Why women get breast cancer, we really do not know. It may be multi factorial; that is a combination of hormonal, genetic, environmental, and even stress-related factors. Regardless of its cause, it is one of the most feared and dreaded diseases a woman can face in her lifetime. Perhaps breast cancer is one feared among women because it has such an emotional and physical impact on our lives. I believe it is because it deeply touches a woman at one of the core aspects of what she represents – her femininity.
The treasures found by Dr. Anderson sparkle throughout this beautifully written account of her journey through the darkness of breast cancer. As a physician, Dr. Anderson writes with the expertise of her profession. But this is not only a doctor’s story, it’s the story of a woman who is also a wife, a daughter, a sister, and aunt and a seeker of the treasure God had for her while she went through the darkness.
Dr. Anderson says “Although, I didn’t know it when I started, I discovered God had been with me the entire time.”
Here’s what Donna Duncan, Executive Director of Linda Creed Breast Cancer Foundation had to say; “ Intimate, touching and a story of spiritual triumph, Taffy Anderson has opened her heart and soul for everyone to see in “Treasure in Darkness.” It’s a testimony to her strength that she’s willing to share her inner thoughts, fears and trails during breast cancer to help other women and families battling the disease.
“From doubt, to despair, to victory as she chronicles her journey through breast cancer, you’ll receive incredible treasure along the way that will inspire you to trust and love HIM more! A must-read for cancer patients, survivors, and those who love them.” States Novella Lyons, Founder & President of Women of Faith and Hope, Inc.
About the author; Taffy A. Anderson, M.D is a physician specializing in gynecology. She is a breast cancer survivor of over five years. As a pastor’s wife, she is active in women’s ministry, which serves a number of churches in her area. She and her husband reside in eastern Pennsylvania.
We give this book, “Treasures in Darkness” five stars. This is a must read for anyone that may be in a storm right now about cancer, or have been in the past. It brings a lot of understanding, encouragement and a ton of knowledge to the subject of breast cancer.

“Slightly Bad Girls of the Bible” - Flawed Women Loved by a Flawless God
Author - Liz Curtis Higgs; Review by: Monroe Taylor
“Slightly Bad Girls of the Bible”, is truly a must read book for everyone who loves to read about God first and learn more about our self, our sister, cousin, niece , mother etc. in many ways. This book shows, a spiteful boss, a defiant employee, a manipulative mother, a desperate housewife, an envious sister….honey, we know these women. We’ve lived with them, worked with them or caught a glimpse of them in our mirrors.
Now let’s take a look at their ancient counterparts of Scripture: Sarah mistreated her maidservant, Hagar despised her mistress, Rebekah manipulated her son, Leah claimed her sister’s husband, and Rachel envied her fertile sister. They were far from evil, but hardly perfect. Mostly good yet, slightly bad. In other words, these matriarchal mamas look a lot like you and I!
“Slightly Bad Girls of the Bible” is simply this; a woman unwilling to fully submit to God. We love HIM, and worship HIM, yet we find it difficult to trust HIM completely, to accept his plan for our lives, to rest in HIS sovereignty.
Every woman will relate to someone in this book. One million readers have already taken a walk through this dynamic book with author Liz Curtis Higgs. She has an eye-opening blend of contemporary fiction and biblical commentary. Laced with humor and heartfelt self-disclosure, Liz’s unique brand of “girlfriend theology” has helped women and will help women of all ages experience God’s grace anew.
“Popular storyteller Higgs takes a look at the vamps and tramps of the Bible, searching for the lessons these wicked women have to reach. Higgs retells these biblical stories with rollicking humor and deep insight as she teaches about the nature of sin and goodness.” Quotes, Publishers Weekly. Gloria Gaither says; “Bad Girls of the Bible is not only a hoot to read; it is full of serious warnings about shaky choices and serious encouragement to take God’s way for our own good.”
